Theoretically, my wife was supposed to go to work.
Theoretically, she was supposed to have been at work on Monday, too. She had
almost gone on Monday, a half hour commute north, but had made the decision to
work from home, something that hadn’t much happened due to the power loss and
poor internet reception. It had been a good thing, though, because they had
shut down the freeway north of us about half an hour after she would have
arrived at work. The freeway was still shut down on Tuesday morning, so she
would have been stuck there overnight with no way to communicate with us. That
would have been a nightmare.

...I eat peanut butter from the jar even when I have power and food is stocked and fires aren't raging all around me.
ReplyDeleteDon't judge.
Glad to hear you're okay and your property is untouched, though. And I still think it's fair to complain about no hot water. It's something we very easily take for granted, and while things COULD be worse, I don't believe that taking an ice cold shower in the dark is exactly a picnic.
ABftS: Oh, I eat peanut butter from the jar, too. In fact, that's usually how I eat it. Doesn't everyone? I think anyone who says "no" is probably lying.
DeleteTake an ice cold shower in the dark is definitely NOT a picnic. In fact, if there's an opposite of what a picnic is, that's probably it.
The fires have all been contained, right? Hopefully this will be the end of that kind of danger for a long while.
ReplyDeleteJeanne: Not completely, no, but they are getting there.
DeleteGlad you made it through okay. This was harrowing to read.
ReplyDeleteIt's weird when half the world is breaking down but the other half of the world keeps on going -- like your wife having to have a meeting even though the fires were so close, and the like. At times like that it seems like society should say "OK EVERYONE JUST LET'S ALL BE WITH OUR FAMILIES AND NOBODY WORRY ABOUT OFFICES AND STUFF" but that doesn't happen and I can't figure out if that's good or bad or both. I guess I land on "when you are worried your house might burn down and you'll have to evacuate, you should be excused from work meetings." But, then, maybe people want to do that stuff?
Either way, I'm glad you guys are okay.
Briane: Yeah, I don't know if people want to do that stuff or not. I think, mostly, it was people in no danger to themselves freaking out about vineyard loss and damage and wanting to know what was going on. And, of course, my wife is the person with that data.
DeleteI'm glad that was the worst of it for you. There are such stories of people who just lost everything.
ReplyDeleteOne story that's local to me. A woman lost a good friend in the Vegas massacre. On the day she was going to a service for that friend, the Canyon Fire 2 hit. And she lost her house.
Why are you going to pull these posts down?
Liz: Well, that would be telling...:P
