About writing. And reading. And being published. Or not published. On working on being published. Tangents into the pop culture world to come. Especially about movies. And comic books. And movies from comic books.
That's a spider? He doesn't look it. I'm watching a documentary that makes me think of you and your son. Finland has the best education system in the world, or close to the best (it can be difficult to measure such successes). Children in Finland spend less time in school and seldom have homework because children are supposed to be children. They need time to play, read, and enjoy sports. One of the things I hated the most about my children's heavy homework years is that it took away their time to enjoy books, and they didn't read books in school more than about once a year. Finland's school hours of about twenty per week include their hour-long lunch periods when they get a real meal made by school chefs. They don't have to shovel their food in their mouths during a twenty-minute break. The lunch break is also intended to encourage the eating of healthy foods. The schools have no vending machines. The high school students who were interviewed spoke multiple languages. I think I should have moved to Finland years ago! In countries with such services, people pay higher taxes, but they (usually) get what they pay for.
WHOA I never could have gotten that close.
ReplyDeleteFreaky little spider...
ReplyDeleteNo. Not cool. I mean, okay. A little cool looking. But not cool because it's a spider and they are just creepy.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to run away screaming now.

ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Janie: Yeah, we need to restructure our whole system, but we're way too mired in tradition and fear of change for anyone to do anything about it.
DeleteThat is a weird looking spider. Do you know what kind it is? I'm going to google it.
ReplyDeleteI believe it's this:
ReplyDeletehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phidippus_johnsoni
Which I think was also the spider in "Castle Roogna" by Piers Anthony but I'm not sure.
Briane: Yeah, that looks like the right one, and it's common to this area. What makes you think it's the Roogna spider?
DeleteOh also cool picture
ReplyDeleteAwesome! How big would you guess it was?
ReplyDeleteTAS: Um... Man, I took that photo weeks ago. Less than half an inch? I'm pretty sure it was more than a quarter. Somewhere in there.
DeleteHm, not a spider I'm familiar with. It has an unusual appearance.
ReplyDeleteShannon: It was pretty cool. I think Briane has the correct one picked out.
