We Went Away

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned the espresso machine I got my wife for her birthday; well, that's not all of what we did for her birthday. I also took her away for a night.

No! Now wait a minute. This is a more significant event than you're crediting it for. Let me explain something:

My wife and I got married about 17 years ago. After we got married, we went on a honeymoon. Well, we went to a music festival, which she calls our honeymoon, though it's never felt like what I think of when I think about what a honeymoon should be like. However, it was just the two of us. That was the last time the two of us went away together, just the two of us. This overnight away from the kids for her birthday was a pretty big deal.

And, hey, the kids survived. Basically, we filled their bowls up with food and made sure they had fresh litter and left them alone... oh, wait, that was the cat. Look, our oldest is 19 so, even if he's not quite self-sustaining yet, the three of them survived one night at home alone.

And, hey, my wife said the night away was "magical," and, well, if we'd gotten back and the cat hadn't made it... Well, it would have been worth it to hear her say that.

Yes, I have some pictures. No explanations will be provided, so make of them what you will.

  1. Getting away together is so important. All couples need couple time away from the kids. The trees and lodge look gorgeous.

  2. My anniversary with my significant other went by at the end of last month, and it was probably, like, four days later when I looked at him and said, "Oh right. We had an anniversary, didn't we?"

A night away is so great. The place looks beautiful!

  3. Gorgeous pictures, Andrew! What a beautiful place to wander and explore and just spend quality time together. I'm glad you guys had that quality time with each other. And that the kids (and cat) survived. Always a plus.

    1. Elsie: It is a beautiful place. We're going to go back at some point, I think. Or maybe not. There are other places to visit, after all.

  5. Good to get away now and then. It looks like you picked a good place--at least the photos are nice.

Now that our kids have all moved away--far away. Getting away would be no problem for us, but usually we're content just to stay at home alone. That's kind of the best. We do plan to get away for a few days next week. That is if all works according to plans.

  6. Make of them what I will? Don't mind if I do.

It started off well enough until you looked through the giant panoramic window and saw a gnome with a butcher knife staring at you. You guys ran out into the woods in a panic, but the evil tree people spilled out from their layer and joined the chase. You made it out of the woods and into the plains, ran up a set of tiny stairs (that, to your horror, did not lead anywhere), before hiding up in a tree for 4 hours. You made a teepee out of the tree bark, but it was blown down in a storm, so you sought shelter in a cave and got unfortunately abducted by molemen. Then when the sun came up you managed to escape, and found refuge in a retreat that was later revealed to be full of cannibals. You hacked and slashed your way out and now you know just how adept the wife is with a meat clever.

Therefore it was the most magical (for all the wrong reasons) trip ever.

  8. I like Beer's story.

Those are great pictures. But I would like to know what the structures were. It's neat that you get to go to a place that has forest and desert. And neat that you get a night away. Congrats

    1. Briane: I like Beer's story, too.

The structures are at the Miwok village in Point Reyes. The big one that looks like a cave is a sweat lodge. The small one above ground was actually a living structure. Like a house. That, yes, you can't lay down in flat out.
