That place was gritty. Dirty. Like what you think of from a movie where something bad happens, because those are always old, gritty (seaside) amusement parks. I think once you start trying to appeal to tourists, you have to clean up your act. Probably less gang members and wild youth at Disney as well. I don't even think I would have thought of that way back in the 70s. Now that I'm thinking about it, Six Flags is reminding me of the Dark Side. Faster. Easier. We used to go a lot in Cleveland when I was little. There was this weird edgy feel about the whole experience in a film noir B movie experience as opposed to a slick Disney happy experience. There is value to both, but more appropriate to certain audiences.

Disney is pretty, whereas in a sense Six Flags is gritty. Other than Belmont Park in San Diego in the early sixties, there are no parks that I've been to many times, but I have been to many parks. Now I'm probably more of Disney guy, but when you come right down to it the best theme park for me is my own house.

But, yeah, I see what you're saying about your writing. We had one in the city I grew up in. They're not much worth it. At least, the one we had was not. It was about the equivalent of the state fair. The only "smaller, local" park that I've been to that was pretty decent was Silver Dollar City in MO, but, then, it's not really all that small.

Shannon: Well, I don't know what Disneyland was like when you were a kid, but it was awesome last year. They just aren't fun to me. Then again, Denver has a Six Flags, and it's exactly as you said - they milk you try, and want you to know every ten feet that they're still wanting to milk you dry. Given, we also went during the summer, when I desperately didn't want to go. I always loved Disneyland and am, in fact, afraid to go back in case I hate it as much as I hated Disney World. I still loved the rides, though. The employees were rude. The FL park was filthy. Blech.

I really want to go back to the CA one, but would hate if it were ruined just like the FL one. I'll just have to go off-season. We went in September before we had kids, and it was fantastic. No waiting in lines! Plus, I adore the Indiana Jones ride (except for the whole dangling mannequin thing, as I have a bit of a fear of those suckers, and it was hanging right above my head...creepy).

So, as you can see, I'm torn. I've been to CA Disneyland a ton, because I was born in CA and had an uncle who worked as a materials buyer for the park and could get us in free. But it's been a decade since I was there, so I'd hate to have my dreams smashed.

And as for amusement parks, blah.

Shannon at The Warrior MuseShannon Lawrencehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934641808195675935noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-58891739367008876502013-03-27T17:27:42.899-07:002013-03-27T17:27:42.899-07:00I've been to both Six Flags and Disney (twice ...I've been to both Six Flags and Disney (twice for each) and have to say, your assessment is spot on.
