I'm so glad I found this review (linked from your latest post) because this is exactly how I felt. The movie was "good" in that the effects were well done and the acting was nice and it got some facts right - but it didn't have the heart and soul of the first trilogy. Spider-man was my first superhero, and it was just really sad to see a movie like this. It just didn't feel like a comic book movie, and at times it felt like Spider-man was placed in as an afterthought. Anyway, I totally agree with you about almost everything in this review, so thanks for sharing it. Going with M.J. for the first series was, really, the only thing I thought they shouldn't have done. I understand why they chose MJ, but I'd have rather they just start with Gwen. Then, again, they were killing the Goblin, so maybe they thought that wouldn't work.

My issue with the re-boot is the feeling that they need to re-tell the origin over and over again. They could have made this new movie without Spider-Man becoming Spider-Man again, and they could have focused more on the character growth that way. It would have made for a deeper, more satisfying movie, especially since they had already introduced Connors in the other series.Andrew Leonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13964775673414653644noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-16070235774833928842012-07-19T12:53:00.130-07:002012-07-19T12:53:00.130-07:00P.S. Continuations at some point become too stagnant or overdone in my opinion, so I never mind a reboot unless they completely ruin it. I was a fan of the Bond reboot, and Batman, and now apparently the Spiderman one as well. Plus, I sort of enjoyed seeing Gwen happen BEFORE Mary Jane the way it was in the comics.S. L. I DO a...I both agree and disagree with your review. I DO agree that the first Spiderman movie (and even to some extent the second) was a pretty great adaptation of the comics. They take the motivations and characters actions almost directly from the comic book, which is pretty cool considering how freely some of the more recent films have been adapted.

My problem with the first three - apart from the fact that I found the third one incredibly disappointing - is that I never liked Toby Maguire as Peter Parker. I don't buy him as the nerdy high school kid the way I bought Andrew Garfield (clearly we're on direct opposite sides on this particular point).

Furthermore, I think the series gets a bit too campy in places, which I understand considering the material they're drawn from. Early comic books WERE more campy, and therefore the movie adaptations (like the Raimi's Spiderman)that follow the same style do so accurately. However, I think this latest film walks a the line - at least for my personal taste - a bit better.

I will say though that my one major disappointment with Webb's version was the missing "With great power..." line. I was pretty stunned that it wasn't included. I think the majority of changes they made from the comic books happened because they were attempting the distance themselves from Raimi's version, and therefore I find them more acceptable. THAT choice, however, I cannot agree with.

Regardless, as Spiderman is one of my very favorite superheros (my absolute favorite one that was not self-created), I am pretty pleased to see that there is an adaptation for everyone. Whether you like Raimi or Webb's version better, I think everyone can agree that the Spiderman movies are some of the best. I could watch 3 out of 4 of them every day and never get bored.S. L. Of course, I think the same of Nolan's Batman and give him low marks, also, for reducing that story to one of revenge.

Michael: Tobey was much better.

Lee: Oh, man, I loved the old Superman TV show. It was so much better than the movies. Nothing against Christopher, because he was great, but the movies themselves didn't live up to his portrayal of the character.

You know, you might want to check out the Marvel movies (the ones made by Marvel); they do really focus on character. Much more so than the others, at any rate.

L.G.: Oh, but, man, that movie, when they made it, was... bad.

Bess: Me, too!

Shannon: Well, no, it's not an exaggeration. According to sources, a re-boot of Twilight is already in the works, and they still have one more of those to go.

Rusty: So, yeah, the Goblin's costume was a bit stiff, and, yet, the movie was spectacular.

The thing with the Bond films is that until the Daniel Craig Bond, nothing was ever seen as a re-boot, it was just a continuation of the story with a different actor. It's only been recently when we've decided that once an actor has been set in a role that you can't continue it with some other actor. It's ridiculous.Andrew Leonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13964775673414653644noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-69316545508949434002012-07-18T19:39:30.542-07:002012-07-18T19:39:30.542-07:00I mentioned... somewhere... that I want to see the...I mentioned... somewhere... that I want to see the Rami version again before I say which one I liked better. I felt the first Rami film was really strong myself. I hated the Goblin's outfit, he looked like a Power Ranger bad guy to me.

But that's production sort of things, nothing to do with the story. I was much more impressed with the new movie that you were though. But I get the idea that these are going to be like Bond films. Getting revamped and rebooted from time to time, but still seeing new versions, and new visions, every few years. I'm cool with that.Rusty Carlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09887821877521181811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-18961116539081077492012-07-18T15:01:07.600-07:002012-07-18T15:01:07.600-07:00Yeah, I haven't seen it yet. Okay, so that's maybe an exaggeration, but it's sure what it feels like. The only things that might make me watch this are Emma Stone and the fact that it isn't the exact same movie made over again (versus some reboots, say...Footloose).Shannon Lawrencehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934641808195675935noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-64594687215018788062012-07-18T14:44:58.460-07:002012-07-18T14:44:58.460-07:00I agree with ALL of this,I agree with ALL of this,Bess Weatherbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17906770012735983929noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-13340239160104062992012-07-18T14:22:43.805-07:002012-07-18T14:22:43.805-07:00Probably won't get out to see this one, though...Probably won't get out to see this one, though I may rent it later on DVD. I did see the other Spider Man with Tobey Maguire and liked it, but this whole obsession with comic book characters and movies has kind of gone over my head. When I heard they were making a movie called The Avengers I thought they were talking about Emma Peel and John Steed from the British Secret Service. :PLuanne G. Superman was the main superhero guy when I was a kid. Then when the Batman TV show came on I was sucked in by all the rage and loved that one too. So when the movie versions came along I was good with both. I liked Chris Reeve and I thought the new dark Tim Burton version of Batman was great. You're right--Batman went downhill after that until Nolan stepped in with the new vision of the franchise.

I really liked Tobey as Spidey. I'm not all anxious to see the new version. Haven't seen The Avengers yet either or many of the other latest superhero gigs. I think I'm kind of burnt out on this genre. I've been more into classics of late and less effects filled character pieces. I'll probably eventually see a lot of these newer superhero films, but I'm not chomping at the bit to see them either.

Lee
Wrote By RoteArlee Birdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11663942782929929334noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-5308546064282752482012-07-18T07:55:28.338-07:002012-07-18T07:55:28.338-07:00I liked the new one better, but I do miss blue-eye...I liked the new one better, but I do miss blue-eyed Tobey Maguire. (And I admit, I liked the second one best of that series.)
Once you find a vision that fits with your own, it's difficult to adjust to a new one. Batman is my favorite character, and once Nolan finishes with the series, it won't matter who does the next one. It's just not going to live up to my expectations.Alex J.
