We both liked it a great deal. Everything you've pointed out above is true, but I guess I'm often more than willing to suspend disbelief for a film like this. I'm not as forgiving these days to suspend my disbelief for a lot of the sci-fi that I watch (which I find myself watching less as time goes by).

Whiplash was entertaining for me aside from the parts that annoyed me. I can be pretty forgiving about a lot of movies while others (e.g. Prometheus I find my assessment to be rather harsh.

Arlee Bird
A to Z Challenge Co-host
Tossing It Out
Arlee Birdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11663942782929929334noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-41421210700107573632015-02-04T16:35:42.680-08:002015-02-04T16:35:42.680-08:00bah

That's horrible. And I agree that adults can be uncaring assholes. That said, the thing that got me in Whiplash is the blood. No one ignores blood, and the kid was leaving a trail of blood as it dripped off his hand and had blood all over one said of his face. So Chazelle could have made it at least somewhat believable if there wasn't all the blood, but I don't buy no one saying, "Dude! You're bleeding everywhere!"Andrew Leonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13964775673414653644noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-91844259574393958702015-01-29T21:10:12.371-08:002015-01-29T21:10:12.371-08:00I left a really long comment and deleted it, becau...I left a really long comment and deleted it, because it was long enough to be a blog post. Instead, I'll just leave this snippet of it:

Sometimes, adults are more oblivious and horrible than would be realistic in fiction. But our job as writers (and screenwriters) is to make the situations "realistic" enough that readers/viewers can buy them. Yet I'm seeing this trend more and more in TV shows, movies, etc., where the situations they stack up to create the tension are ridiculous. Humorous, even. But then you see the way people accept it. Buy it hook, line, and sinker. And you realize that's why it happens. Maybe we just have a greater ability to suspend disbelief these days? Maybe we want to more?Shannon Lawrencehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934641808195675935noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-14014858616721186782015-01-29T21:08:33.077-08:002015-01-29T21:08:33.077-08:00This comment has been removed by the author.Shannon Lawrencehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934641808195675935noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-79952804065092519102015-01-29T19:47:51.699-08:002015-01-29T19:47:51.699-08:00Janie: No problem; it happens sometimes.

A movie review should not reveal that much about the movie's plot unless you start with large letters informing readers that the review contains multiple spoilers. I took a movie review class in college. I write a review every week. If I'm going to reveal a spoiler, then I make it very clear. I still look forward to seeing Whiplash, and I'll try to put what you've said out of my head. If you write more reviews that give away so much plot, please issue a warning in your title and at the beginning of your review.

Love,
Janie Janie Junebughttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10573607241326291404noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-58511887033932909382015-01-28T15:22:00.377-08:002015-01-28T15:22:00.377-08:00We haven't seen it but I'll admit to curio...We haven't seen it but I'll admit to curiosity, mostly because I think JK Simmons is awesome. It's like, maybe, they are blinded by the music aspect of the movie. Or, maybe, they all had experiences with a band director who yelled at them for screwing up, so it's some kind of "experience" to see the movie. Then your review reaffirms the bad things I've heard about this film. I might see this one eventually when it makes it to DVD, but I might forget to see it too. This sounds like one of those films that will end up on my Netflix queue toward the bottom and never make it toward the top because I keep putting other films above it.

Then again, based on your review, I might have to see it just to see what you've described. It sounds pretty crazy.\

Arlee Bird
A to Z Challenge Co-host
Tossing It OutArlee Birdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11663942782929929334noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-69801680393182725922015-01-28T11:13:50.898-08:002015-01-28T11:13:50.898-08:00Pat: I think it's the kind of thing that appea...Pat: I think it's the kind of thing that appeals to a very specific demographic, a demographic which makes up about 80-90% of the Academy, hence the nomination.Andrew Leonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13964775673414653644noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-39723136250113219512015-01-28T07:23:25.957-08:002015-01-28T07:23:25.957-08:00Sounds lame.Sounds lame.PT Dillowayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09394481476862013009noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-24202039220267137572015-01-28T05:47:13.825-08:002015-01-28T05:47:13.825-08:00Alex: It took longer than five minutes to watch it...Alex: It took longer than five minutes to watch it, and it skipped through the actual driving (except for the crash) and the running.Andrew Leonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13964775673414653644noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658526372996117205.post-27047204988690569152015-01-28T03:33:31.257-08:002015-01-28T03:33:31.257-08:00That entire sequence of events is contrived.
